THE VETERAN SPIRIT BEHIND LOCKPORT BREWERY
This is a subtitle for your new post
Nestled in the heart of Ohio, Lockport Brewery stands as a testament to the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of its owner, Andrew Marburger. This local brewery and taproom, which features a full menu of mouthwatering options such as burgers, chicken sandwiches, and NY-style pizza, has become a beloved gathering spot in the community. With a commitment to quality and community, Lockport Brewery is more than just a place to enjoy great beer and food; it’s a dedicated supporter of veterans and community engagement.
The Veteran Influence
Andrew Marburger, a proud veteran, founded Lockport Brewery after several years of home brewing and
gaining experience at another local brewery. His military background has been a significant influence on his journey into entrepreneurship. Andrew reflects on his military service, saying, “The military teaches all its members the value of self-reliance, in addition to the value of teamwork. Both are integral to success in entrepreneurship.” This mindset has been crucial in navigating the challenges of running a small business, where the principles of “Adapt & Overcome” and teamwork are pivotal.
Supporting the Veteran Community
Lockport Brewery is dedicated to supporting veterans, both through employment and community engagement. “We employ veterans when available—our head brewer is also a veteran! We regularly interface with veteran organizations such as the Save22 campaign,” Andrew shares. The Save22 campaign, which focuses on veteran suicide prevention
and awareness, is one of the many ways Lockport Brewery gives back to the veteran community.
From Military to Brewery
The transition from military service to brewery ownership was driven by Andrew’s passion for brewing and a strategic partnership with his wife, who has a background in marketing. “After working at another local brewery
for a couple years, I realized I could make the beer and
my wife could sell it. The rest is history!” Andrew’s military experience provided him with invaluable skills in leadership, problem-solving, and resilience, all of which have been essential in his entrepreneurial journey. “Just like in business, curveballs, or expecting the unexpected, is standard practice in the military. The ability to roll with the punches and come out on top is critical to success in both areas,” he explains.
Advice for Veteran Entrepreneurs
For other veterans considering starting their own businesses, Andrew offers insightful advice. “Depending on the industry in which you’re starting a business, the top-down style of command in the military may not be
at all applicable in terms of leading civilian teams. It’s important to remember that the vast majority of my
staff never went to basic training. We have at least three generations of folks employed, who each have their own preferred style of communication and work ethic.” Andrew emphasizes the importance of a hybrid approach, blending the positive aspects of military and civilian management styles to effectively lead diverse teams.
Looking Ahead
As for the future, Andrew’s goals for Lockport Brewery are rooted in disciplined growth and responsibility to
his employees. “We always hope to grow! But it’s also important to us to grow in a well-disciplined, controlled manner. With 35 employees, we have a real responsibility not to overreach, and risk the paychecks my staff depend on.” This cautious yet ambitious outlook ensures that
Lockport Brewery will continue to thrive and serve as a cornerstone of the community.
Lockport Brewery, under the leadership of Andrew, exemplifies the strength and
dedication of veteran-owned businesses. With a commitment to quality, community, and support for fellow veterans, this brewery is not just a place to enjoy a great pint, but a hub of camaraderie and resilience.
