A JOURNEY FROM AIRCRAFT MECHANIC TO CYBER WARRIOR

THE STORY OF NATHANIEL KOONTZ

NATHANIEL KOONTZ’S LIFE

changed forever the moment he decided to join the Air National Guard. The year was 2004, and Nathaniel found himself stepping into a new world, donning the uniform of an aircraft mechanic with the 179th Airlift Wing in Mansfield, Ohio. What started as a commitment to serve his country transformed into

a lifelong journey of self-discovery, resilience, and unparalleled personal growth. Today, as a Cyber Operations Technician, Nathaniel reflects on how joining the military was the best decision he ever made, setting the stage for a remarkable story of dedication and triumph.

Hailing from Canton, Ohio, Nathaniel’s roots are deeply embedded in the Perry and Plain Local school districts. Growing up in this close-knit community, he was surrounded by the values of hard work and perseverance. Nathaniel still calls Canton home, living there with his wife, Abbey, of nearly 17 years, and their three sons: Zeke, Milo, and Fin. His journey
from a local kid to a respected member of the Air National Guard
is a testament to his unwavering commitment to service and family.

The decision to join the military came to Nathaniel during

a pivotal moment in his life. As a sophomore at Heritage Christian, he witnessed the tragic events of 9/11 unfold live on television:

“I was sitting in history class my sophomore year of high school when 9/11 occurred,” Nathaniel reflects. “I went to a small school (Heritage Christian), and everyone piled into the same room to watch the news on the only TV with cable in the building. I decided that I wanted to join right then.”

That day, amidst the shock and sorrow, a seed was planted. Inspired by the legacy of his grandfathers who served in Korea, Nathaniel
felt a profound call to serve his country. The Air National Guard became his chosen path, offering him a way to honor his family’s military tradition and contribute to something greater than himself.

Throughout his years in active duty, Nathaniel learned invaluable lessons that shaped him into the man he is today. Initially stationed as a flightline aircraft mechanic, he spent 19 years working on the C-130H, a pivotal role that demanded precision, quick thinking, and an unyielding dedication to the mission. Each sortie and every repair was a challenge that pushed him to his limits, fostering a

sense of self-confidence and expertise. Whether it was fixing an aircraft with the crew onboard or mastering new skills, Nathaniel consistently rose

to the occasion, embodying the core values of the Air National Guard. However, Nathaniel’s journey

was not without its challenges. Transitioning from an airlift wing to a cyberspace wing marked a significant shift in his career. The move required extensive new training, including a rigorous five- month Cyber Operations course.

“Our base transitioned from an airlift wing to a cyber wing, and
this required new training,” says Nathaniel. “I just returned from five months at Cyber Operator school and while there were many days I didn’t think I would make it I was able to dig deep, work hard, and graduate.”

Though many days during this period were fraught with self- doubt and exhaustion, Nathaniel’s determination never wavered.

He dug deep, worked tirelessly, and ultimately graduated, ready
to tackle the cyber mission at his base. This experience underscored his resilience and reinforced his belief in his own capabilities.

Reintegrating into family life after deployments posed another significant challenge for Nathaniel. Returning
home was often likened to two gears grinding together at different speeds, requiring patience
and understanding to sync up again. Despite the difficulties, Nathaniel credits his wife, Abbey, and their robust support system of family and friends
for helping him navigate these transitions. Their unwavering support allowed him to slowly reintegrate into family life, finding a balance between his military duties and his role as a husband and father.

Beyond the military, Nathaniel’s involvement in his sons’ sports and interests has been a source of immense fulfillment. Coaching for Plain Local Youth Lacrosse and watching his kids play brings him joy and strengthens their bond, making up for the seasons missed during deployments.

“Outside of the military, I love to be involved with my kids’ sports and interests. With three boys, there’s a lot of sport to watch! I also coach for Plain Local Youth Lacrosse and that brings me a lot of fulfillment. I’ve spent many sports seasons watching my kids play via FaceTime because of deployments, and I am grateful to be able to get involved when I’m home.”

Nathaniel Koontz’s journey in the Air National Guard is a powerful testament to the transformative power of military service. From his beginnings as
an aircraft mechanic to his current role in cyber operations, Nathaniel has continually pushed himself to new heights. The military has not only honed his skills but also built his self-confidence and resilience. Despite the challenges of reintegration and the demands of his career, Nathaniel remains steadfast, driven by his commitment to his
family and his country. His story is a shining example of how dedication, perseverance, and
a supportive community can propel one to
overcome any obstacle and achieve greatness.
